The gallbladder, one of the six fu-organs and extraordinary organs, is located under the right side of the ribs and attached to the short lobe of the liver. It is a hollow muscular organ storing bile, the refined essence of human body. The stored bile should be excreted regularly; therefore, it is characterized with discharge without storage, which is why the gallbladder is one of the six fu- organs. The gallbladder also stores essence, but it is different from other fu- organs that transform food and water as well as discharge wastes. Therefore, it is also called the extraordinary organ. The physiological functions of the gallbladder involve storing and excreting bile and assisting the free flow of liver qi. The Gallbladder Meridian of Foot-shaoyang is exterior-interiorly connected to the Liver Meridian of Foot-jueyin.
